Alfonso Carrillo M has been managing partner of Carrillo y Asociados, a leading Guatemalan cross-border corporate, investment, tax and commercial law firm, since 1989. His practice areas include corporate, agency and distribution, banking, insurance, securities, finance, M&A, taxation, and international law, as well as complex commercial litigation, ADR, fraud and white-collar crime.

Mr Carrillo’s many high-profile representations, as well as his role as a trusted adviser to the Guatemalan government and World Bank on their business/investment regulatory regimes, have made him one of the leading legal advisers to Guatemalan and multinational businesses, including banking and financial institutions, on their complex cross-border transactions.

In 1984, Mr Carrillo served as a member of the Guatemalan Tax Reform Commission. In 1986 he was adviser to the Ministry of Finance, and also served as a member of the government’s Pension Plan Revision Commission. In addition, Mr Carrillo served as a member of the government’s Securities and Market Law Drafting Commission and was appointed by the World Bank as a temporary legal adviser to the Guatemalan modernisation programme in 1996 and 1997. Mr Carrillo is also an arbitrator for the Guatemalan Chamber of Industry.

His professional memberships include the Guatemalan, American, International and Inter Pacific Bar Associations, the US Trademark Association, Industrial Property Inter American Association, and the Guatemalan Institute of Notarial law. Mr Carrillo has authored numerous authoritative articles on cross-border commercial transactions and investment. He also recently contributed to “Asset Tracing and Recovery, The FraudNet World Compendium, for the International Chamber of Commerce’s FraudNet.

Mr Carrillo earned his law and notary public degrees from Rafael Landivar University in 1982 after attending Francisco Marroquín University’s School of Economy and Business Administration (1978–1979). He subsequently lectured at both universities. His international studies have included the Harvard Law School Program of Instruction for Lawyers (PIL), and the Harvard Business School.
