LACCA Buenos Aires Roundtable

Organiser: Latin American Corporate Counsel Association Sponsorship opportunities

23 September 2019 at 09:30 to 12:30
Buenos Aires, Argentina

LACCA will be hosting a roundtable in Buenos Aires in September to discuss some of the major issues impacting in-house counsel in Argentina including the unique challenges of running a local legal team, making the most of law firm relationships and promoting diversity in-house.

Running a legal team in Argentina

Over the past few years, Argentina has been working on an ambitious structural reform agenda, while starting to correct some of the macroeconomic imbalances. Despite some major advances however, major challenges remain as Macri's re-election prospects look decidedly less certain, and government officials scramble to contain both record-breaking inflation and an increasingly volatile currency with little success. As a result, being in charge of an in-house legal department in Argentina demands the broadest of skills, as well as being able to put out fires on a range of fronts simultaneously. This session will allow members to share the latest challenges they face, including tips on how to cope.

Getting the most from external counsel

The decision whether or not to hire outside counsel can often be fraught with anxiety. Which firm? How much to pay? How much to have the outside firm do? This session will focus on some of the most important factors to consider when taking the leap as well as strategies to ensure GCs are getting the best value from their law firms including the benefits of using RFPs, setting organisational objectives, utilising alternative fee arrangements as well as monitoring and feedback.

Promoting diversity in the legal profession

As in other parts of the world, multinational corporate clients in Argentina are in the forefront of driving diversity and inclusion efforts and while an increasing number of companies have been implementing policies designed to promote greater diversity in the workplace, there is still a long way to go. The final discussion will focus on ways in which GCs can help promote greater diversity in-house as well as in the wider legal profession, including tackling unconscious bias, establishing a truly inclusive work environment and practical policies for legal teams.
