Roundtable begins

Central American regional integration: Challenges & opportunities

As the process of political, economic and social integration continues to evolve in Central America, this session will look at the increasing regionalisation of the region’s legal industry and some of the challenges and opportunities for in-house counsel. Delegates will discuss the development and evolution of the role of GCs in the multi-geographical cluster, their main challenges and concerns, as well as some of the best practices in managing teams and external counsel in the region.

3.45: Impact of local anti-corruption developments on in-house teams

Over the last two years, a region-wide push to improve anti-corruption efforts has seen the creation of anti-impunity bodies in several countries in Central America including Cicig in Guatemala and Maccih in Honduras. In addition, the unravelling of major corruption scandals such as the Panama papers scandal and “La Linea” in Guatemala, have highlighted the need for stronger legislation and tighter enforcement in the region and forced companies to implement more robust compliance frameworks. This session will look at the impact of these developments on in-house teams in the region including compliance priorities and best practices, ongoing challenges and future trends.

4.30: Coffee break

5.00: Diversity in Central American legal industry

Diversity in the workplace is a hot topic globally and the legal profession is no exception. However, while the gender gap at the top of the profession remains stubbornly hard to close, a recent Latin Lawyer survey revealed higher levels of diversity in Central American jurisdictions. This session will discuss what more GCs can do to improve diversity within their legal departments as well as how in-house teams can drive greater equality within their external law firms.

5.45: Promoting in-house counsel networking in the region

Delegates will discuss the potential of creating a Central American in-house networking group to share ideas, concerns and best practices. The idea is to create a space for the local in-house community to connect, compare notes, swap stories and sharpen legal knowledge and commercial skills.

6.15 onwards: Roundtable ends, cocktails will be served until 7.30pm
